A selection of the very best from one of America's most thought-provoking writers: poems on life, faith, doubt, and death that read like memoir, essay, and story. As The New York Times said, "likely to resonate with many who have come face to face with life's most important questions." Thomas Lynch--like Wallace Stevens and William Carlos Williams--is a poet who writes about real things with language rooted in the everyday yet masterfully infused with power: I have steady work, a circle of friends and lunch on Thursdays with the Rotary. I have a wife, unspeakably beautiful, a daughter and three sons, a cat, a car, good credit, taxes, and mortgage payments and certain duties here. Notably, when folks get horizontal, breathless, still: life in Milford ends. They call. I send a car. Thomas Lynch spent his career as an undertaker in Midwest America--and in his off-hours became a writer of exceptional insight. Publishers Weekly calls him, "A poet with something to say and something worth listening to." This collection presents 140 of his greatest poems drawn from his previous books, Skating with Heather Grace, Still Life in Milford, Grimalkin, The Sin-Eater, and Walking Papers. This is a collection for readers who love all life's questions and mysteries--big and small.

In 1990 Seahawk Deep Ocean Technology of Tampa, Florida, commenced the world’s first robotic archaeological excavation of a deep-sea shipwreck south of the Tortugas Islands in the Straits of Florida. At a depth of 405 meters, 16,903 artefacts were recovered using a Remotely-Operated Vehicle. The wreck is interpreted as the Buen Jesús y Nuestra Señora del Rosario, a small Portuguese-built and Spanish-operated merchant vessel from the 1622 Tierra Firme fleet returning to Seville from Venezuela’s Pearl Coast when lost in a hurricane. Oceans Odyssey 3 introduces the shipwreck and its artefact collection – today owned and curated by Odyssey Marine Exploration – ranging from gold bars to silver coins, pearls, ceramics, beads, glass wares, astrolabes, tortoiseshell, animal bones and seeds. The Tortugas shipwreck reflects the daily life of trade with the Americas at the end of the Golden Age of Spain and presents the capabilities of deep-sea robotics as tools for precision archaeological excavation.

These Books of Rates list – for the use of English customs officials – the official values of hundreds of products commonly traded overseas in the sixteenth century. What goods needed to be listed and what their official valuations were held to be, had been the subject of wary negotiations between the crown and the Merchants Adventurers. These lists thus offer us four snapshots of the shape of English foreign trade. But that is not all. Unbeknownst to all previous scholars, the 1536/45 and 1558 Books of Rates were translated into German (in 1558/60) for the use of Hanseatic diplomats haggling with the crown about customs rates. These translations reflect Hanseatic commercial interests in trade with England, in a word: the shape of the Hanse's trade with England. The subject indices, structured to function as a glossary, will serve as a glossary for all scholars working on the economic history of the sixteenth century.
