Since it was founded in 1826, Jefferson Barracks has stood for nearly two centuries as a symbol for many aspects of America's history. Many explorative expeditions in the 19th century launched from Jefferson Barracks, an iconic gateway to the West during the country's expansion. A training ground for new programs, Jefferson Barracks was the home of America's first permanent Dragoons (later the United States Cavalry), first School of Infantry, and first regiment of buffalo soldiers. The largest induction and mustering-out center during both the First and Second World Wars, it housed and trained a myriad of soldiers before and after their deployments. Now the home of the Missouri Air National Guard, a Veterans Administration hospital, Jefferson Barracks Historic Park, a national cemetery, and a growing museum district, Jefferson Barracks is preserving its place in history as well as serving toward America's future. The historic images in this book illustrate a rich history of Jefferson Barracks through some of its citizen soldiers--famous and not--and through the incidents that made it an American icon.

Shortlisted for the 2014 Royal Historical Society’s Gladstone Prize and the 2014 Templer Award for the Best First Book by a New Author. Sex and alcohol preoccupied European officers across India throughout the nineteenth century, with high rates of venereal disease and alcohol-related problems holding serious implications for the economic and military performance of the East India Company. These concerns revolved around the European soldiery in India – the costly, but often unruly, 'thin white line' of colonial rule. This book examines the colonial state's approach to these vice-driven health risks. In doing so it throws new light on the emergence of social and imperial mindsets and on the empire, fuelled by fear of the lower orders, sexual deviation, disease and mutiny. An exploration of these mindsets reveals a lesser-explored fact of rule – the fractured nature of the Company state. Further, it shows how the measures employed by the state to deal with these vice-driven health problems had wide-ranging consequences not simply for the army itself but for India and the empire more broadly. By refocusing our attention on to the military core of the colonial state, Wald demonstrates the ways in which army decision-making stretched beyond the cantonment boundary to help define the state's engagement with and understanding of Indian society.

Darryl Jaspers longs to serve his country. With an unrivaled determination, he joins The US Marine Corps and begins boot camp at the infamous Parris Island. Nothing is easy. It could at first be blamed by his reaction to stress and the rigors of training, but on a night that changes everything, something unusual happens. Hearing a platoon practicing drill outside his window in the middle of the night, Jaspers assumes recruit errors were made, and punishment was due. But he never sees a thing. When he begins to discover the origin of these unseen marches by exploring the woods beyond the barracks, he soon realizes there is much more to fear than the drill instructors. The perils of basic training are brutal, but cannot compare to the deadly occurrences that literally shake the grounds and alter reality.

Vietnam and Beyond is a collection of wartime letters written home by Jim Markson from March 1967 to March 1968. Jim carried sadness and boxed-up memories from Vietnam. Perhaps, if it were not for the general divided and oppositional public opinion of the Vietnam War at that time, the soldiers returning home might have been able to open up and begin the healing process. Instead, those soldiers returning from Vietnam were afraid to tell their story. These fears bound each soldier to the other. We are very proud to embrace all veterans and include stories of veterans of all wars, including WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan to show the similarities of war and the soldier from one generation to another.

"Aldona Sendzikas has produced a book on one of Toronto's forgotten institutions: the New Fort, or Stanley Barracks (which stood to the west of the better-known Fort York). Aldona explores such themes as the construction of the garrison in the aftermath of the Rebellion of 1837, the place of the British army in the life of the colonial city, the founding of the North-West Mounted Police at the New Fort, the early ears of Canada's professional army, the military's extensive operations at 'Exhibition Camp' between 1914-18 and 1939-45, the interment of enemy aliens at the site during the Great War, and the destruction of most of the Stanley Barracks in the 1950's. "-Carl Benn, Ph.D., author of Historic Fort York, The Iroquois in the War of 1812, The War of 1812, and the Mohawks on the Nile. "Sendzikas takes us back to the days when Stanley Barracks was a bustling military centre, and shows us what it was like for the thousands of men and women who lived and trained there over the decades."-Jonathan F. Vance, Ph.D., professor and Canada research chair in Conflict and Culture, Department of History, University of Western Ontario.

C.M.A.C., A Vietnam Era Trilogy, contains three sagas that describe the late 1960s, Vietnam era, U.S. Army life of James A. Callaghan. Saga of a Student Warrior--The first story follows the military training of Callaghan who, during his draft induction, was christened "Hallaghan" due to a bureaucratic error. It describes how he dealt with his new and strange environment, and his first assignment as a post radio officer. Saga of a Saigon Warrior--The Capital Military Assistance Command (C.M.A.C.), Saigon, and the surrounding districts were Callaghan's home in Vietnam during 1969. He met his match when he tangled with General Gottard, the personification of the cartoon character 'Yosemite Sam, ' until a year later when Callaghan suffered an untimely accident while clearing post. Saga of a Garrison Warrior--Returned from near death by a C.M.A.C. medic, Callaghan was quickly moved to Third Field Force hospital near Tan Son Nhut air base, where, after a lengthy operation, he was transferred to Guam to convalesce and regain his real name. Healed, the recently promoted Captain Callaghan then commanded a signal company, where the trials and tribulations of a garrison environment tested his perseverance.
