Excerpt from Battles of English History Battles are the most generally interesting class of events in history, and not without reason. Until mankind have all been reduced to a single pattern, which would put an end to history, there will be conflicting interests, sentiments, creeds, principles, which will from time to time lead to war. We may settle many disputes peacefully by mutual conces sion, or by voluntary submission to external arbitration: but an appeal to arms always lies behind, and is the only re source when differences go too deep for reconciliation, or when the self-respect of nations is too severely wounded. Even within a nation there are many possibilities, remote perhaps yet never unimaginable, which may bring about civil war. And though it is perfectly conceivable that a given war may be waged to the end without a single im portant battle, if the superior skill of one side enables it to gain overwhelming advantage without fighting, yet practically this does not happen. Battles are in fact the decisive events in the contests which are of sufficient moment to grow into war. It is very easy to exaggerate their importance, to fix attention on the climax only, and lose sight of the events which led up to it, and which went very far in most cases towards determining its result. But after all the battle is the climax, and the world in general may be forgiven for over-estimating it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from England's Battles by Sea and Land a Complete Record The work is planned in epochs beginning in 1792, with the wars which sprang out of the French Revolution. The periods of peace or those in which there was no important military or naval movement. Are of course excluded, the object being to present, divested of extraneous interest, the accounts of war in which England has been engaged, or concerned. These embrace the great conflicts which closed with Waterloo; and although to people of middle age the memorials Of that time may disclose no new feature of interest, it may be doubted whether the younger generation are so well able to realise the consequences of the Victories of Wellington. The disposition is growing to dismiss what may not be of immediate service as ancient history; and the wars of Napoleon, the campaign in the Peninsula, even the threatened invasion of England, may possibly be regarded as events too re motely historical to be worth an hour's study. Yet a familiarity with the military history of that time is essential if we would understand the nature of the debt Europe owes to' England. Perhaps it may even be said that it is impossible to ignore the early wars of the century and understand the present map of Europe. The new German Empire supposed to be founded at Sadowa, was founded at Waterloo. Italy also owes her freedom to the conqueror of Napoleon. Austria, through fluctuating fortune, is regaining her strength, and owes this to her libera tion from Napoleonic influence. In short, the military and naval successes of Wellington and Nelson saved Europe and made the subsequent developments possible. Excerpt from Visits to Fields of Battle, in England, of the Fifteenth Century In the course of the fifteenth century, England experienced, in a lamentable degree, the sad effects of internal discord, and the miseries caused by the conflicts of adverse factions. It is scarcely possible, for historians to point out, in the annals of any country in Europe, in the feudal ages, deeds of violence and bloodshed, of a more appalling nature, than those which the chroniclers have recorded, as having occurred in England, during the period which intervened between the years 1400 and 1500 - a period memorable for the sanguinary wars of York and Lancaster. During the continuance of those disastrous conflicts, thousands of brave men perished in arms, the axe of the executioner was seldom idle, great numbers of the nobility and gentry lost their lives in the field or upon the scaffold, property was usurped in consequence of wholesale confiscations, numberless innocent lives were sacrificed, and many happy homes were outraged. This misery was the result of contests for a crown, which perhaps neither of the claimants merited, nor does it appear, that it was of great importance to the nation, which of the rival competitors wore it.
