One of the most important primary historical sources of the American Revolutionary War, "A Narrative of a Revolutionary Soldier" by Joseph Plumb Martin, is the published account of his time serving in the Continental Army and Connecticut Militia. Originally published anonymously in 1830, it was thought lost to history until a surviving first edition copy of the narrative was found in the 1950's. Martin's account is particularly significant as Martin served as a private during most of the war and his recollections are remarkably accurate and detailed. Historians believe Martin kept a journal during the war and then enlarged on the details prior to publishing the account later in his life. Martin was only 15 years old when he convinced his grandparents to allow him to join the Connecticut Militia in 1776. He completed a tour of duty and returned home, but was eager to re-enlist. At age 16, he joined the Continental Army and served until 1783, when he was discharged. Martin's regiment participated in many important battles and events, such as The Battle of Brooklyn, The Battle of Monmouth, the encampment at Valley Forge, and the Siege of Yorktown. This fascinating first-person account is required reading for anyone who studies the American Revolution. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.

In the great volume of universal love the lan guage bursts forth in strains too eloquent and apprises man of the truth. Not to love home - the place from which he first inhaled his breath of existence - not to love the numerous fond and endearing associations of youthful recollections - the little stream, the tall tree, the old fence overgrown with the briar where the wild bird builds her annual nest the mother's smile and the father's stern advice, the old schoolhouse, the college wall, the youthful girl with sweet and innocent caress, the friend's warm hand, the prayer, the song, the dance of fearless, thoughtless joy - can these be erased from the human heart 'e Methinks not. 'One of the best firsthand accounts of war as seen by a private soldier.' - St. Louis Post-Dispatch Joseph Plumb Martin's captivating memoir brings to life his experiences as a soldier during the American Revolution. Martin invites us on an intense literary journey to each of his eight campaigns during the revolution, providing a vividly detailed narrative of his adventures, dangers, sufferings and anecdotes as a soldier. His first hand, personal account is both fascinating and harrowing. Through remarkable detail, Martin recreates the constant and excruciating hunger that leads the soldiers to eat old shoes, tree bark and beehives, and their sleep-deprivation from tossing and turning on cold, hard ground in the midst of extreme weather conditions. We follow Martin as he buries the bodies of fellow soldiers, enjoys the safety and freedom of brief visits home, suffers gruesome injuries and illnesses, trudges through storms without shoes or sufficient clothing, and takes British soldiers prisoner. From wandering around the decrepit ruins and murdered inhabitants of a town mercilessly seized by the British to attempting to physically gouge the smallpox from his fellow soldiers' bodies, Martin's journey is a haunting and memorable one. His honest account preserves and recreates his memories as a soldier, offering a uniquely personal, vivid and detailed commentary on a crucial moment in American history.
