As You Like It was written around 1599 and is one of Shakespeare’s comedies. It is set in a pastoral world (an idealized rural setting) and is full of jokes, songs, puns, and romance. It is one of the most light-hearted of Shakespeares works. There are more songs in As You Like It than any other Shakespeare play. The play makes many references to classical mythology and medieval folklore. It was inspired by Thomas Lodge’s story Rosalynde published in 1590. The play is partly set in the countryside in France, in the Forest of Arden (or, alternatively, Ardenne). In contrast, the other setting is the court of a duchy. In the duchy, Duke Frederick has successfully usurped his brother Duke Senior from his position as ruler. Duke Senior has been exiled to the Forest of Arden, where he vows to begin anew, along with his followers and supporters. The exiles talk about the qualities of court life and how they compare to country life. This annotated edition includes a biography and critical essay.

This scene can be divided into three main parts and four subparts. The scene starts of with a conversation between Rosalind, disguised as ́Ganymede`, and Jaques who is trying to explain his melancholy. Rosalind is asking some interesting questions and makes a fool out of Jaques in the end. The next part starts off with Orlando entering the scene and Jaques leaving. It can be divided into four subparts as Rosalind refuses Orlando at first before she teaches him a lesson in love. Afterwards they are having a mock-wedding before Orlando leaves Rosalind again to dine with Duke Senior. The third and last part consists of a conversation between Rosalind and Celia.

A fool! I met a fool in the forest"). Jaques provides a sharp contrast to the other characters in the play, always observing and disputing the hardships of life in the country.

Orlando, whose older brother Oliver plotted his death, has fled there, too.Recent scholars have also grounded the play in the issues of its time. These include primogeniture, passing property from a father to his oldest son. As You Like It depicts intense conflict between brothers, exposing the human suffering that primogeniture entails. Another perspective concerns cross-dressing. Most of Orlando's courtship of Rosalind takes place while Rosalind is disguised as a man, "Ganymede." At her urging, Orlando pretends that Ganymede is his beloved Rosalind. But as the epilogue reveals, the sixteenth-century actor playing Rosalind was male, following the practice of the time. In other words, a boy played a girl playing a boy pretending to be a girl. The authoritative edition of As You Like It from The Folger Shakespeare Library, the trusted and widely used Shakespeare series for students and general readers, includes:-Freshly edited text based on the best early printed version of the play-Full explanatory notes conveniently placed on pages facing the text of the play-Scene-by-scene plot summaries-A key to the play's famous lines and phrases-An introduction to reading Shakespeare's language-An essay by a leading Shakespeare scholar providing a modern perspective on the play-Fresh images from the Folger Shakespeare Library's vast holdings of rare books-An annotated guide to further readingEssay by Susan SnyderThe Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC, is home to the world's largest collection of Shakespeare's printed works, and a magnet for Shakespeare scholars from around the globe.
