In order to take advantage of advances in the field of mental measurement, the Armed Forces and the Department of Defense have supported the development of a computerized adaptive version of the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) for use in military personnel selection and classification. This report describes the development and calibration of item pools for each of nine ASVAB content areas. Domain specifications were developed for the content areas, and more than 3,600 items were written. The items were then pretested on samples of recruits. These data were used to select items for calibration in a sample of over 138,000 examinees tested in Military Entrance Processing Stations and their associated testing sites May and June of 1983. The calibration data were then analyzed using both and equivalent-groups design and a joint-calibration design that used matched experimental and operational test data. Item response theory a, b, and c parameters based on the three-parameter logistic item response model were computed. The parameters resulting from the joint-calibration approach were recommended for operational use.

Download Dimensionality of the Math Knowledge Item Pool for the Accelerated CAT-ASVAB (Computerized Adaptive Testing-Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) Project Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
A computerized adaptive testing (CAT) version of the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is being developed in the Accelerated CAT-ASVAB Project. The theory underlying CAT assumes that items in the pool for any subtest are unidimensional. This report examines the validity of the assumption for the Math Knowledge subtest by factor analyzing scores in different content areas.

Download Full-Information Item Factor Analysis of Tests Forms From the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) CAT (Computerized Adaptive) Pool Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Data for nine tests in the computerized adaptive test pool for the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery were subjected to item factor analysis by the marginal maximum likelihood method. Because each of the tests was represented by three distinct forms to which items had been randomly assigned, the stability of the results could be examined by comparing independent analyses. Certain items gave clear and generally interpertable factor solutions on all tests. The statistical significance of each principal factor after the first was tested by means of the large sample chi-square statistic corresponding to the increase in marginal maximum likelihood as successive factors were added. To allow for possible cluster effects in the sampling of respondents, a design effect of two was assumed when computing these test statistics. Apart from minor factors associated with doublets and occasional item format effects, the main factors were all interpertable. Most notably, General Science showed a distinction between business arithmetic and other calculation problems. Shop Information showed a clear distinction between Metal Shop vs. Carpentry and General Contracting. The most interesting finding was a clearly significant two factor solution for Word Knowledge. One of these factors appears to represent vocabulary drawn from literary sources and recreational reading, and other from television and the news media. Implications of these findings for vocational testing are discussed.

Download Computerized Adaptive Testing Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This celebrated primer presents an introduction to all of the key ingredients in understanding computerized adaptive testing technology, test development, statistics, and mental test theory. Based on years of research, this accessible book educates the novice and serves as a compendium of state-of-the-art information for professionals interested in computerized testing in the areas of education, psychology, and other related social sciences. A hypothetical test taken as a prelude to employment is used as a common example throughout to highlight this book's most important features and problems. Changes in the new edition include: *a completely rewritten chapter 2 on the system considerations needed for modern computerized adaptive testing; *a revised chapter 4 to include the latest in methodology surrounding online calibration and in the modeling of testlets; and *a new chapter 10 with helpful information on how test items are really selected, usage patterns, how usage patterns influence the number of new items required, and tools for managing item pools.
