Test excavations in the proposed construction area of the East Boundary Deschutes National Forest Southwesterly Section (MP 4.16 to MP 11.24 ) of the Oregon Forest Highway Route 46, the Cascades Lakes Highway, in Deschutes County, Oregon, were conducted under a contract between the Highway Division of the Oregon Department of Transportation and the Oregon State Museum of Anthropology (OSMA), University of Oregon. This sub-surface testing was undertaken in order to determine the nature, extent and potential significance of two prehistoric sites, 35DS56 and 57, that were threatened by the proposed construction.

Preparations for reconstruction of the Paulina-East Lake Highway within Newberry Crater, central Oregon, required evaluation of nine archaeological sites identified adjacent to the highway. At four sites -- 35DS487, 35DS488, 35DS214, and 35DS216 -- no evidence of significant cultural deposits were found within the highway corridor. At the remaining five sites -- 35DS34 (the Paulina Campground site), 35DS486, 35DS485 (the Game Hut Obsidian Quarry), 35DS220, and 35DS219 (the Hot Springs Boat Ramp site) -- intact cultural deposits were documented that are judged to be valuable for interpreting prehistoric cultural patterns in the region.
