Aging is a treatable condition! For more than a century aging and a particular lifespan have been widely thought to be an inescapable and fundamental aspect of human existence. Indeed, Darwin's evolution theory tells us that the force of evolution is toward defeating aging, leading to the idea that aging is the result of unalterable laws of physics or chemistry. We can find different treatments for different age-related diseases like cancer and heart disease but aging is itself an untreatable fact of life. Today it is increasingly clear that aging is actually the result of complex biological programs that purposely limit lifespan in humans and most animals because this created an evolutionary advantage for populations of wild animals including our prehistoric ancestors. Programmed aging and supporting evolutionary concepts are a logical consequence of relatively recent discoveries in genetics as well as observations regarding the aging and lifespan characteristics of many different organisms. As a consequence, we can increase healthy human lifespan by interfering with the aging program. Interfering with a biological process is a familiar problem in medicine, and research toward developing treatments based on this idea are underway. Goldsmith describes the 160-year history of still-unresolved scientific arguments over the evolutionary nature of aging, the increasing empirical evidence of aging programs, and the exciting prospects for lifespan extension and healthy living. More practically, the book describes: Key observations about the nature of aging. Orally administered substances known to increase longevity in mice. Why exercise increases longevity. Anti-aging medicine issues with existing health care systems. Social, educational, ethical, and economic issues with extending lifespan. How lifespan extension concepts add to our ability to devise treatments for age-related diseases. Contents 1. Introduction 2. Nature of Aging and Lifespan 3. Evolution Theory and Aging 4. How do some people avoid the slowing down, deteriorating, and weakening that plagues many of their peers decades earlier? Are they just lucky? Or do they know something the rest of us don’t? Is it possible to grow older without getting sicker? What if you could look and feel fifty through your eighties and nineties? Founder of the Institute for Aging Research at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and one of the leading pioneers of longevity research, Dr. Nir Barzilai’s life’s work is tackling the challenges of aging to delay and prevent the onset of all age-related diseases including “the big four”: diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s. One of Dr. Barzilai’s most fascinating studies features volunteers that include 750 SuperAgers—individuals who maintain active lives well into their nineties and even beyond—and, more importantly, who reached that ripe old age never having experienced cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, or cognitive decline. In Age Later, Dr. Barzilai reveals the secrets his team has unlocked about SuperAgers and the scientific discoveries that show we can mimic some of their natural resistance to the aging process. This eye-opening and inspirational book will help you think of aging not as a certainty, but as a phenomenon—like many other diseases and misfortunes—that can be targeted, improved, and even cured.

Nobody wants to get old. And why would we? The aging process eventually affects every one of our body systems - from mental function and sexual performance to physical appearance, ability, and strength. But chronological age has little to do with a person's biological age: some people are old at fifty, while others are still sharp and spry at ninety. The things we've always considered ''normal aging'' are actually caused by physiological problems that, in many cases, respond to medical treatment and healthy lifestyle habits. As a result, the human life span can be significantly increased while maintaining - or even improving - the quality of life! This contemporary approach to aging - known as anti-aging medicine - is a specialty practiced by more than 30,000 physicians worldwide. It uses advanced scientific and medical technologies for the early detection, prevention, treatment, and reversal of age-related dysfunction, disorders, and diseases. In the near future, we can look forward to boundless health and vitality thanks to these anti-aging approaches. You can start by enjoying 121 Ways to Live 121 Years ... and More! - a handbook for living a long and healthy life.

A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER “Brilliant and enthralling.” —The Wall Street Journal A paradigm-shifting book from an acclaimed Harvard Medical School scientist and one of Time’s most influential people. It’s a seemingly undeniable truth that aging is inevitable. But what if everything we’ve been taught to believe about aging is wrong? What if we could choose our lifespan? In this groundbreaking book, Dr. David Sinclair, leading world authority on genetics and longevity, reveals a bold new theory for why we age. As he writes: “Aging is a disease, and that disease is treatable.” This eye-opening and provocative work takes us to the frontlines of research that is pushing the boundaries on our perceived scientific limitations, revealing incredible breakthroughs—many from Dr. David Sinclair’s own lab at Harvard—that demonstrate how we can slow down, or even reverse, aging. The key is activating newly discovered vitality genes, the descendants of an ancient genetic survival circuit that is both the cause of aging and the key to reversing it. Recent experiments in genetic reprogramming suggest that in the near future we may not just be able to feel younger, but actually become younger. Through a page-turning narrative, Dr. Sinclair invites you into the process of scientific discovery and reveals the emerging technologies and simple lifestyle changes—such as intermittent fasting, cold exposure, exercising with the right intensity, and eating less meat—that have been shown to help us live younger and healthier for longer. At once a roadmap for taking charge of our own health destiny and a bold new vision for the future of humankind, Lifespan will forever change the way we think about why we age and what we can do about it.

Current health strategy has usually concentrated on the treatment of diseases after its start within a general health-care system. The way is harsh for the people. The trend of expenditures in health care will nearly undoubtedly lead to massive rises in medical expenses, likely failing the national health insurance system. The flow of healthcare would be set to change, with more critical rank involved in preventive medicine. Thus, with its focus on aging, anti-aging medicine might play a vital character in preventive medicine. For example, there are two anti-aging drugs (USA) and one anti-aging nutraceutical (Japan) for the human clinical trials under the approvals by Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and these tests are ongoing. The term for anti-aging clinical trials is the first time to be used approved by FDA for the clinical trial using metformin. The first example of this standard change is approval by FDA of the clinical trial for deciding the efficacy of metformin, in reducing the risk for aging-associated diseases. This book is intended to introduce these messages to ordinary people. Hopefully, people will have a better future.

Reviews - This book provides very useful and practical information on changes most people can make that will enable them to live a healthier and more enjoyable life. Dr. Barber does a good job explaining why he makes the suggestions he makes - such as detailing what each vitamin does in our body (what its function is) and what the upper limits of consumption should be. He also discusses free radicals and their role in the development of human disease. This is a fairly complicated topic but he presents the material in a way that it can be understood. Additionally, it is an enjoyable book to read because Dr. Barber includes things from his own life that give the book more meaning. I highly recommend this book. - Diane Anderson, a reader from Illinois
