For more than a century, the National Wildlife Refuge System has succeeded in conserving irreplaceable ecosystems, even as our nation's population has skyrocketed and urbanization has spread. This extraordinary and vast expanse of lands, now encompassing 542 wildlife refuges across 95 million acres of some of the world's best wildlife habitat, is our gift to the "unborn generations" for whom President Theodore Roosevelt created the refuge system on Pelican Island, Florida, March 14, 1903.

On October 19, 2000, H.R. 4286, the Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge Establishment Act, was signed into Public Law 106-331. This law established the Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge in Bibb County, Alabama, and directed the Secretary of the Interior to acquire up to 3,500 acres of lands and waters within the boundary of the refuge. In partnership with The Nature Conservancy, the Service began acquiring land for the refuge in September 2002 and currently has 1,120 acres.

The Service is utilizing a conservation easement program to conserve wildlife habitat on private land within the 561,700- acre boundary of the Front. Conservation easements are a proven, effective, and non-regulatory means to conserve high quality wildlife habitat and to maintain historic ranching heritage. The Service plans to purchase perpetual conservation easements from willing sellers on 170,000 acres of private land between Birch Creek and the South Fork of the Dearborn River. Funding for the easement program will come from the Land and Water Conservation Fund, which is subject to the annual Congressional appropriations process.
