Excerpt from Annual of Sandy Run Baptist Association, North Carolina, 1981: Ninety-Second Annual Session, Mission in Context, Theme: Thinking Globally-Acting Locally; Held With Big Springs Baptist Church Ellenboro, N. C. October 26 and Glenwood Baptist Church, Bostic, N. C. October 27 The Reverend William Gaston Camp was born on the south side of the First Broad River between Cliffside, North Carolina, and Chesnee, South Carolina, on December 4, 1886. His father operated a ferry boat transporting people and livestock across the river. His home became a way station for travelers de layed on their Journey when the river was too high to cross safely. A tragic experience, the accidental drowning of his young black friend, Mose, was a turning point in the life of the then seventeen year old Camp. Realizing that he and his friend had both delayed their decision to surrender their lives to Christ, William Camp was soon convinced that he should become a Christian. He made his profession of faith and was baptized into the fellow ship of the State Line Baptist Church in September, 1903. Excerpt from Annual of Sandy Run Baptist Association, North Carolina, 1991: One Hundred and Second Annual Session, Mission in Action Theme, Breakthrough; Teach the Bible to Win; Held With Corinth Baptist Church, Ellenboro, Nc, and First Baptist Church, Bostic, Nc His first two years of formal education were spent In a one -teacher school. Discipline was administered quickly and impartially by the teacher using a sweet gum switch about three feet long. He means she had a deformity of the left arm but had a super strong right arm. It took' two years for him to learn to read in this school. School consolidation occurred even in those days and his school was combined With another to form a new two-teacher school. This school was a three-mile walk from his home. The unpaved road had large water holes following heavy rains. He remembers having to help his younger brother and sister wade around and through these man -sized puddles on their way to and from school. L. W. Cain attended this two-teacher school for four years. His education progressed quicker here. One of the two teachers was a man, who he recalls as a good disciplinarian and avery good teacher. His father did not like the idea of his children having to walk three miles to school on a road that often provided wading ponds for them. The decision was made. The family bought a forty-acre farm near White Oak. His new home placed him near one of the best schools in Bladen County.
