Nature and Nation explores the relations between people and forests in Peninsular Malaysia where the planet's richest terrestrial eco-system met head-on with the fastest pace of economic transformation experienced in the tropical world. It engages the interplay of history, culture, science, economics and politics to provide a holistic interpretation of the continuing relevance of forests to state and society in the moist tropics. Malaysia has long been singled out for emulation by developing nations, an accolade contradicted in recent years by concerns over its capital-, rather than poverty-driven forest depletion. The Malaysian case supports the call for re-appraisal of entrenched prescriptions for development that go beyond material needs. -- Book cover.

This thesis explores the politics of sustainability surrounding forestry resources in Peninsular Malaysia. This study draws upon the National Forestry Policy 1978, and its 1992 Revision, to explore how Peninsular Malaysia's forestry management system has developed over time. Drawing upon the political ecology literature, I develop a series of keywords related to sustainable development. Using content analysis, I identify patterns in the presence or absence of these keywords. I then conduct critical discourse analysis to investigate how the language of the 1992 Revision differed from the original Policy. Results indicate significant textual differences between the 1978 Policy and 1992 Revision, specifically with regard to issues of sustainability of forestry resources. I argue that such differences provide evidence that Peninsular Malaysia does in fact treat the sustainability of forestry resources as an urgent concern; however, with regard to proposed implementation strategies, the extent to which these issues will be realized remains uncertain.
