The problem of the study was to investigate the effects of a regular program of practice in note-reading on the rate of word-reading (RWR) in below normal readers. Level of pretest RWR scores, sex, and age were identified as variables in the study. The purpose of the study was 1) to evaluate the RWR gains of fifth grade students of below normal RWR who were given a six-week program of daily note-reading practice on a keyboard instrument, and 2) to compare these results with the RWR gain of fifth grade students of below normal RWR who were not given the program of daily note-reading practice, when pretest RWR scorews, sex, and age were held constant. The research was a separate sample pretest-posttest experimental-control equivalent materials true-experimental design. Acievement in RWR was sampled in one grade level of below normal readers who were enrolled in remedial reading classes. The instrument used for measurement was the "Basic Reading Rate Scale" (BRRS), Forms A and B, by Miles A. Tinker and revised by Ronald P. Carver. The sample of thirty-six subjects consisted of students who were enrolled in fifth grade remedial reading classes in the six elementary schools of the Grandview Consolidated School District No. 4, Grandview, Missouri. All schools have predominantly white populations and are in the lower-through upper-middle socio-economic bracket. Although all subjects in fifth grade remedial reading were used, eighteen subjects were randomly designated as the experimental group, and seventeen were randomly designated as the control group. Complete sets of data for thirty-three subjects were obtained. Form A of the BRRS was administered as the pretest. Subjects in the experimental group were instructed to practice for speed for ten minutes each school day for six weeks on specially-prepared note-reading sheets. These exercises increased gradually in difficulty according to numbers of notes played. All subjects were then post-tested with Form B of the BRRS, and the data were computer-processed for statistical significance by one-way analysis of variance. Planned comparisons were analyzed by a Scheffé test of difference between means. No significant gain in RWR was demonstrated by subjects in the experimental group as a whole, but subjects who pretested in the lower half of the group did increase significantly over the control group. No significant difference was demonstrated according to sex or age. Within the limitations and circumstances of the investigation, the program of note-reading practice appears to have been effective onnly for increasing the RWR of very slow readers. Further investigation under other circumstances is warrented before positive conclusions can be reached.

In the last decade, important discoveries have been made in cognitive neuroscience regarding brain plasticity and learning such as the mirror neurons system and the anatomo-functional organization of perceptual, cognitive and motor abilities.... Time has come to consider the societal impact of these findings. The aim of this Research Topic of Frontiers in Psychology is to concentrate on two domains: neuro-education and neuro-rehabilitation. At the interface between neuroscience, psychology and education, neuro-education is a new inter-disciplinary emerging field that aims at developing new education programs based on results from cognitive neuroscience and psychology. These projects may also aim at testing the efficiency of video-games and of new methods such as Trans Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) for therapeutic interventions in children or adolescents with learning disabilities. This Research Topic will bring together neuroscientists interested in brain plasticity and the effects of training, psychologists working with adults as well as with normally developing children and children with learning disabilities as well as education researchers directly confronted with the efficiency of education programs. This dissertation examines the reciprocal relationship between text literacy and music literacy through an experimental design. Music teachers and English Language Arts (ELA) teachers often address similar components of literacy, including fluency, comprehension, and symbolic interpretation. The theory of cognitive structuralism maintains that through derivative and correlative subsumption, material that is learned in one context is strengthened when applied in a disparate context. Therefore, ELA and music teachers who work in isolation are missing an opportunity to teach parallel literacy concepts for the common advantage of teachers and students. This study seeks to explain how students enrolled in conventional and literacy-enriched band environments perform better than non-band students on text literacy tests. It also asks if conventional band students differ from literacy-enriched band students on text and musical literacy tests. Fourth-grade students were randomly assigned to one of three groups: a control group (n = 11), a conventionally taught beginning band group (n = 11), and a literacy-enriched beginning band group (n = 10). The experimental treatment included 14 small group band lessons and 14 full band rehearsals. Groups were then compared for textual literacy growth using the NWEA Measures of Academic Performance (MAP) and musical growth using the Watkins Farnum Performance Scale (WFPS). ANCOVA planned contrasts showed that literacy-enriched students significantly outperformed conventional band students and control students on the MAP literature reading subtest. The research design allowed for the defense of literacy-enriched band instruction as a generalizable cause of higher literacy scores. Additional comparisons between the control group and the two experimental groups revealed no statistically significant differences between the group means on the overall reading scores or the remaining reading subtest scores. The lack of significance suggested that the statistical model was a poor fit for the data. Furthermore, a small sample size and large unexplained variance contributed to a lack of statistical power. Therefore, the application of the cognitive structuralist theory on the remaining MAP reading tests remained inconclusive. The conventional and literacy-enriched band groups were also compared against each other on text and music literacy growth. There were no statistically significant differences between the conventional group and literacy-enriched group on the MAP or on the WFPS. This suggested that literacy-enriched instruction in band could benefit a student's textual literacy skills without compromising musical performance goals. It also suggested that more study is needed to determine the extent to which the explicit instruction of ELA reading skills in band may benefit musical ability. The overall findings implied that literacy-enriched band instruction caused higher textual literacy scores, and the results may be generalized to similar circumstances. Suggestions for practice included increased collaboration among teachers, enhanced teacher pre-service and in-service opportunities, additional use of student-centered progressive instructional strategies, and the careful reconsideration of eliminating or reducing the availability of band to students. Future research would benefit from the quantitative and qualitative models proposed herein.
