The International Ultraviolt Explorer (IUE) was the first space UV telescope able to observe a supernova event and follow it during its luminosity decline. This was made possible not only by the sensitivity of the instrument, but also by the observatory-like mode of operation, which allows quick reaction to the announcement of a supernova discovery. Indeed in the case of SN 1982b the first spectroscopic observation after its discovery was obtained by IUE, which on that occasion also provided an accurate positional fix for the supernova with respect to the nucleus of the parent galaxy NGC 2268. To date, six supernovae were observed with IUE and a summary of the observations is reported. The Atlas presented here consists of an observing log, photographs of the spectra (coded in false color), plots and flux tables: a detailed description of these contents is given.

A quick reference for the ultraviolet spectra of many categories of astronomical objects. Shows reflected sunlight from the Moon, planets, and asteroids, and emission from comets. Contains the spectra for: pre-main sequence stars, chemically peculiar stars, pulsating variables, subluminous stars, and Wolf-Rayet stars. Presents phenomena such as the chromospheric and transition region emissions from late-type stars; composite spectra of stars, gas streams, accretion disks and gas envelopes of binary systems; the behavior of gas ejecta shortly after the outburst of novac and supernovac; and the H II regions, planetary nebulae, and supernova remnants. Population 2 stars, globular clusters, and luminous stars in the Magellanic Clouds, M31, and M33, are included. Finally, gives the ultraviolet spectra of galaxies of different Hubble types and of active galaxies.

This new, fourth, edition of Allen's classic Astrophysical Quantities belongs on every astronomer's bookshelf. It has been thoroughly revised and brought up to date by a team of more than ninety internationally renowned astronomers and astrophysicists. While it follows the basic format of the original, this indispensable reference has grown to more than twice the size of the earlier editions to accommodate the great strides made in astronomy and astrophysics. It includes detailed tables of the most recent data on: - General constants and units - Atoms, molecules, and spectra - Observational astronomy at all wavelengths from radio to gamma-rays, and neutrinos - Planetary astronomy: Earth, planets and satellites, and solar system small bodies - The Sun, normal stars, and stars with special characteristics - Stellar populations - Cataclysmic and symbiotic variables, supernovae - Theoretical stellar evolution - Circumstellar and interstellar material - Star clusters, galaxies, quasars, and active galactic nuclei - Clusters and groups of galaxies - Cosmology. As well as much explanatory material and extensive and up-to-date bibliographies.
