Exploring personal experiences and therapeutic relationships as an art therapy intern at a group home residential facility for youth who were troubled and at risk for engaging in high-risk behaviors. Working within a residential facility for adolescent male clients, who have been court ordered into a secure shelter setting, requires an intern to learn about the population, their environment, and the diagnoses of the clients entering the program. This paper provides a review of literature on several useful approaches to treatment including the sanctuary model, cognitive behavioral therapy, and art therapy with adolescent juveniles in a secure shelter. The literature review will also provide supporting information on how the intern not only worked with adolescent male detainees, but also how she formed therapeutic relationships with clients who only stayed very briefly within the program of the agency. The following section will then provide examples of the intern's experiences using art therapy within individual and group sessions as well as a review of directives that were most beneficial. Reproductions of various clients' artwork will be discussed with a focus on the themes that emerged. The final section of this paper shares lessons learned from this internship experience.

This study attempts to explore the use of body art in art therapy with adolescent boys in residential treatment to increase engagement and self-expression. This theoretical research is based on my work as an art therapy intern at a residential facility for young people in Evanston, Illinois. In my work with adolescent boys, I witnessed their natural proclivity to use their bodies as a way to express their identity: their physical posturing, clothing and accessories, body movement and gesture, as well as their use of self-adhesive tattoos and writing or drawing on their arms and hands were all a means of self-expression for them. For the purposes of this paper, body art is defined as body painting, image transfers, projected images, body casting, and body adornment. The research for this thesis includes a historical and sociocultural overview of body art, its therapeutic applications, and interviews with art therapists who have worked with adolescent males in residential treatment about their experiences and application of body art both in their personal and professional practice. Research results indicated a greater modern-day acceptance of the use of body art, a lack of art therapy literature relating to the use of body art in art therapy practice, and a need to expand the definition of body art to include various impermanent forms and material types. This thesis proposes a framework for the application of impermanent body art interventions in art therapy with adolescent males in residential treatment. The framework emphasizes: 1) the need for a clear definition of body art delineating inclusion and exclusion of specific materials and processes, 2) clear intentions and rational behind the application of body art with adolescent boys in residential treatment, and 3) an examination of the potential benefits and risks of using body art with this population in order to make informed choices regarding process and materials.

A graduate art therapy internship experience occurring from August 2021 - January 2022, which included the COVID-19 pandemic, within a Long-Term Structured Residential care program (LTSR) for adults with "acute mental illness" in Western Pennsylvania is described in this paper. During the internship period, there were 15 residents with varying diagnoses and presenting mental health concerns such as schizophrenia, borderline personality disorder, and varying degrees of suicidal ideation, self-harm; most of which, if not all, experienced some type of trauma. The setting operated from a recovery-model supporting a daily schedule, achieving activities of daily living, and finding pleasure in life. The review of literature includes background on the recovery-model of mental health treatment, including person-centered art therapy, and the need for trauma-informed care in all levels of treatment due to the prevalence of trauma. The art therapist intern implemented a person-centered, trauma-informed philosophy in an intuitive open-studio approach to facilitate individualized recovery observed through a case study.
