Established in 1986, the U.S. Special Operations Command was set up to bring the special operational disciplines of all branches of the military under a single, unified command to act on missions involving unconventional warfare, special reconnaissance, foreign internal defense, and direct action... The Marine Special Operations Command ("MARSOC") is the newest component of the military's shift toward a fully integrated Special Operations Command structure. At first, the Marines were strongly against any Marines serving under anyone other than another Marine. Then 9/11 happened. In the years following, Marine forces found themselves growing more agreeable to inter-branch operational command, finally forming the Marine Special Operations Command in 2006. Always Faithful, Always Forward follows the journey of a class of Marine candidates from their recruitment, through assessment and selection, to their qualification as Marines Special Operators. Retired Navy Captain Dick Couch has been given unprecedented access to this new command and to the individual Marines of this exceptional special-operations unit, allowing him to chronicle the history and development of the Marine Special Operations Command and how they find, recruit, and train their special operators.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 On February 24, 2006, the U. S. Marine Corps Forces, Marine Special Operations Command, was officially activated at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. The new special operations component began modestly with a small staff that had been known as the Marine Special Operations Advisory Group. #2 The history of the Marine Corps dates back to colonial times. The first American Marines served in the British Navy, and were used as colonial marines under Admiral Edward Vernon in 1739. They were later used as sharpshooters during ship-to-ship actions. #3 The American Revolution became an open conflict with the engagements at Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775. The colonies had no navy to speak of, and they relied on the few ships of the colonial navies and privateers to oppose the overwhelming superiority of the British Navy. #4 The United States Marine Corps is the most culturally distinct and tradition-bound military service in the United States. The Marines have always felt they were special, and from their early days when colonial recruiters made their way from tavern to tavern in search of a few good men, the Marines have always felt they were just that: special.

The Department of Defense activated U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM) in 1987, but the Marine Corps did not become a full partner until 2006. This study explores why. The activation of U.S. Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC) demonstrates the limitations of a senior civilian to prompt change in a military organization, especially after his perceived indecision encourages additional resistance. Culture matters. The Marine Corps adopted an "acknowledge and evade" strategy to retain control of its Marines, prevent the creation of an "elite within an elite" in its ranks, and undermine Secretary Rumsfeld's eventual desire to create a Marine Corps special operations component. The non-traditional backgrounds of the officers and senior-enlisted personnel who proved pivotal in MARSOC's development exposed them to unique career opportunities that better equipped them to adapt to the demands of the post-9/11 environment. These Marines represented a fundamental disconnect between the culture of the Marine Corps as an institution and how that culture manifested in the actions of its members. They believed in the special operations mission and its importance to the future of the Marine Corps. Motivated by professional duty, they embodied what it means to be a Marine and helped Secretary Rumsfeld overcome an intransigent senior Marine Corps leadership. These quiet professionals are the unsung heroes of the Marine Corps' journey to a special operations component.I. Introduction * II. Military Innovation * A. Bureaucracies and Change * B. Sua Sponte Latin for “Of Their Own Accord” The 75th Ranger Regiment’s Motto Army Rangers are not born. They are made. The modern 75th Ranger Regiment represents the culmination of 250 years of American soldiering. As a fighting force with our nation’s oldest and deepest tradition, the Regiment traces its origins to Richard Rogers’s Rangers during the prerevolutionary French and Indian War, through the likes of Francis Marion and John Mosby, to the five active Ranger battalions of the Second World War, and finally, to the four battalions of the current Ranger regiment engaged in modern combat. Granted unprecedented access to the training of this highly restricted component of America’s Special Operations Forces in a time of war, retired Navy captain Dick Couch tells the personal story of the young men who begin this difficult and dangerous journey to become Rangers. Many will try, but only a select few will survive to serve in the 75th Ranger Regiment. Sua Sponte follows a group of these aspiring young warriors through the crucible that is Ranger training and their preparation for direct-action missions in Afghanistan against America’s enemies, anywhere, any time, and under any conditions. The Small Wars Manual is a manual on tactics and strategies for engaging in certain types of military operations created by the United States Marine Corps. The purpose of this work is sharing experience and preserving the achievements of tactics and organization of small wars, or different military operations of the United States in countries where government is "unstable, inadequate, or unsatisfactory for the preservation of life and of such interests as are determined by the foreign policy" of the United States. The book starts with the definition of the term "small war" and continues into more than 500 pages on tactics, personnel structure, communication chain, transportation and logistics, military-civil relationship, psychological side of war, training, and support of native armed organizations and much more. The book is extremely interesting as a manual on tactics, whether it is used for a military operation or any other sort of massive campaign involving a large part of population, like elections. For example, it contains a chapter telling how to plan and organize legally the disarmament of local population. It tells what laws should be issued and what organizations form, what sort of personnel should be involved and what should be their roles. A reader will find guidelines on how to distribute and spare resources needed for a campaign, and how to properly cross a river in a dangerous area. Given the book's organization, structure and abundance of important information, covering different aspects of civil and military campaigns, this volume is a must-read for any person engaged in a state service or a student considering career in serving their country.
