Human conversational partners are able, at least to a certain extent, to detect the speaker’s or listener’s emotional state and may attempt to respond to it accordingly. When instead one of the interlocutors is a computer a number of questions arise, such as the following: To what extent are dialogue systems able to simulate such behaviors? Can we learn the mechanisms of emotional be- viors from observing and analyzing the behavior of human speakers? How can emotionsbeautomaticallyrecognizedfromauser’smimics, gesturesandspeech? What possibilities does a dialogue system have to express emotions itself? And, very importantly, would emotional system behavior be desirable at all? Given the state of ongoing research into incorporating emotions in dialogue systems we found it timely to organize a Tutorial and Research Workshop on A?ectiveDialogueSystems(ADS2004)atKlosterIrseein GermanyduringJune 14–16, 2004. After two successful ISCA Tutorial and Research Workshops on Multimodal Dialogue Systems at the same location in 1999 and 2002, we felt that a workshop focusing on the role of a?ect in dialogue would be a valuable continuation of the workshop series. Due to its interdisciplinary nature, the workshop attracted submissions from researchers with very di?erent backgrounds and from many di?erent research areas, working on, for example, dialogue processing, speech recognition, speech synthesis, embodied conversational agents, computer graphics, animation, user modelling, tutoring systems, cognitive systems, and human-computer inter- tion.

In this book, a novel approach that combines speech-based emotion recognition with adaptive human-computer dialogue modeling is described. With the robust recognition of emotions from speech signals as their goal, the authors analyze the effectiveness of using a plain emotion recognizer, a speech-emotion recognizer combining speech and emotion recognition, and multiple speech-emotion recognizers at the same time. The semi-stochastic dialogue model employed relates user emotion management to the corresponding dialogue interaction history and allows the device to adapt itself to the context, including altering the stylistic realization of its speech. This comprehensive volume begins by introducing spoken language dialogue systems and providing an overview of human emotions, theories, categorization and emotional speech. It moves on to cover the adaptive semi-stochastic dialogue model and the basic concepts of speech-emotion recognition. Finally, the authors show how speech-emotion recognizers can be optimized, and how an adaptive dialogue manager can be implemented. The book, with its novel methods to perform robust speech-based emotion recognition at low complexity, will be of interest to a variety of readers involved in human-computer interaction.

Computer Assistive Technologies for Physically and Cognitively Challenged Users focuses on the technologies and devices that assist individuals with physical and cognitive disabilities. These technologies facilitate independent activity and participation, serving to improve daily functional capabilities. The book features nine chapters that cover a wide range of computer assistive technologies that give readers an indepth understanding of the available resources to help the elderly or individuals with disabilities. The topics covered in the book include 1) The category and ontology of assistive devices, 2) Web accessibility and ICT accessibility for persons with disability (PWD), 3) Assistive technologies for blind and visually impaired people, 4) Assistive technologies for home comfort and care, 5) Assistive technologies for hearing impaired people using Indian sign language synthetic animations, 6) Augmentative and alternative communication/hearing impairments, 7) Accessibility innovations to help physically disabled users, 8) Adhesive tactile walking surface indicators for elderly and visually impaired people mobility, 9) future of assistive technologies This book serves as a textbook resource for students undertaking modular courses that require learning material on computer assistive technology. It also serves as a reference for graduate level courses in disability studies, humancomputer interaction, gerontology and rehabilitation engineering. Researchers working in the allied fields intersecting computer science, medicine and psychology will also benefit from the information provided in the book.

The popularity of deep neural networks and vast amounts of readily available multi-domain textual data has seen the advent of various domain/task specific and domain agnostic dialogue systems. In our work, we present a general dialogue system that can provide a custom response based on the emotion or sentiment label selected. A dialogue system that can vary its response based on different affect labels can be very helpful for designing help-desk or social help assistant systems where the response has to follow a certain affective tone, such as positive, compassionate, etc. To address this task, we design a model that can generate coherent response utterances conditioned on a specified affect label (emotion or sentiment). We use a Sequence-to-Sequence model with an adversarial objective to remove affect from the learned representation of the input utterance, and generate the response based on this representation and the target affect label. Two models were evaluated: affect embedding and multi-decoder. We hypothesize that removal of the affect from the input utterance is helpful in generating a response conditioned on a different affect label. The models were evaluated on a large Twitter dialogue corpus. The results support our hypothesis.

Emotion pervades human life in general, and human communication in particular, and this sets information technology a challenge. Traditionally, IT has focused on allowing people to accomplish practical tasks efficiently, setting emotion to one side. That was acceptable when technology was a small part of life, but as technology and life become increasingly interwoven we can no longer ask people to suspend their emotional nature and habits when they interact with technology. The European Commission funded a series of related research projects on emotion and computing, culminating in the HUMAINE project which brought together leading academic researchers from the many related disciplines. This book grew out of that project, and its chapters are arranged according to its working areas: theories and models; signals to signs; data and databases; emotion in interaction; emotion in cognition and action; persuasion and communication; usability; and ethics and good practice. The fundamental aim of the book is to offer researchers an overview of the related areas, sufficient for them to do credible work on affective or emotion-oriented computing. The book serves as an academically sound introduction to the range of disciplines involved – technical, empirical and conceptual – and will be of value to researchers in the areas of artificial intelligence, psychology, cognition and user—machine interaction.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 4th IEEE Tutorial and Research Workshop on Perception and Interactive Technologies for Speech-Based Systems, PIT 2008, held in Kloster Irsee, Germany, in June 2008. The 37 revised full papers presented together with 1 invited keynote lecture were carefully selected from numerous submissions for inclusion in the book. The papers are organized in topical sections on multimodal and spoken dialogue systems, classification of dialogue acts and sound, recognition of eye gaze, head poses, mimics and speech as well as combinations of modalities, vocal emotion recognition, human-like and social dialogue systems, and evaluation methods for multimodal dialogue systems.

The construction of a natural interactive human-computer interaction has become an integral component of intelligent system development, constituting a core subject within the field of human-computer interaction. Grounded in the utilization of human perception theories, this study proposes a robust method for speech emotion recognition and a model for inferring user emotional state changes, thereby achieving a hu-man-computer interaction experience characterized by both listening and articulating, and conveying sentiments effectively. Simultaneously, focusing on the audio-visual modalities within human-computer interaction, this research explores methods for con-structing interactive feedback in auditory and visual modalities within real hu-man-computer dialog scenarios. This aims to synchronize textual, verbal, and visual expressions in human-computer interaction, enhancing its naturalness, improving user experience, and augmenting satisfaction and pleasure during interaction. The research contributions are as follows: Introducing a method that robustly identifies user emotional states in real hu-man-computer speech dialogue scenarios through the utilization of local and global attention mechanisms. This method generates robust and distinguishable representa-tions of speech emotion, thereby enhancing the robustness and accuracy of speech emotion recognition systems in authentic dialogue scenarios.
