This volume is a compilation of papers that were presented at the Symposium 4A: "Advanced Structural Materials" of the XXII International Materials Research Congress, organized in collaboration with MRS, which was held from August 11 to 15, 2013 in Cancún, Mexico. The symposium was devoted to fundamental and technological applications of structural materials, and continued the tradition of providing a forum for scientists from various backgrounds with a common interest in the development and use of structural materials to come together and share their findings and expertise. The "Advanced Structural Materials" symposium has been held for the last 19 years with the objective of presenting overviews and recent investigations related to advanced structural metallic, ceramic and composite materials. The topics include innovative processing, phase transformations, mechanical properties, oxidation resistance, modeling and the relationship between processing, microstructure and mechanical behavior. Additionally, papers on industrial application and concrete are included.

Rapid industrial growth has witnessed the ever-increasing utilization of sand from rivers for various construction purposes, which has caused disruption to natural ecosystems. Sustainable Construction Materials: Recycled Spent Garnet presents an investigation into the capacity for these minerals to serve as a sand replacement and as a viable, sustainable construction material to help mitigate the current rate of exploitation of river sand. Features: Presents the effects of spent garnet on the fresh and hardened characteristics of self-compacting geopolymer concrete in terms of workability and mechanical strength. Examines spent garnet with regard to concrete durability in response to carbonation, as well as sulphate and acid attack. Includes a comprehensive review of the existing literature in the field, including past developments in self-compacting geopolymer concrete, as well as the ongoing activities in the field of spent garnet-based concrete production.

The plastics industry is a major player for consumer items, notably for the automotive, consumer electronics and packaging industries, and is necessarily very active in innovation. As a result, moulded thermoplastics are achieving new heights in decorative appearance and quality. Many striking aesthetic effects are possible by employing new polymer blends coupled with a diverse range of decoration and surface treatment technologies. These can produce three-dimensional and tactile finishes, high definition images, flawless high gloss and metallic surfaces, as well as effects ranging from imitation materials, interferential colours, colour gradients, colour change and travel, gloss and matte combinations, and even acoustic or olfactory effects. Manufacturing processes to achieve these include several types of in-mould film, coating or decorating technique, relatively recent technologies to improve surface quality, as well as traditional separate decorating or coating processes such as dry offset; flexographic; inkjet; pad and screen printing; foil transfer; labelling; laser marking; plating; spray coating; and vacuum deposition. This unique book analyses and compares recent trends in each of over 20 types of mainstream manufacturing process and 10 classes of sensory effect they can produce. Supported by over 100 tables, a 3-year sampling of over 1,000 mentioned patent documents and hundreds of commercial developments helps to identify the main trends and their innovators, key innovative clusters and the most sought-after effects, as well as provide indications for the future.
