Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln as a Spiritual Influence Fortunate indeed is the person who has read Raymond Warren's dramatized biography of Abraham Lincoln, The Prairie President, and his Abe Lincoln, Kentucky Boy, and who possesses this beautiful little brochure on Abraham Lincoln as a Spiritual Influence. To that person Lincoln will have become a living reality. The writer of this foreword is thoroughly familiar with the literature about Lincoln, has visited most of the places where he lived, and has become absorbed in the study of his life and character; but nothing else has made Lincoln so graphically real to him as have Col. Warren's masterly ver sions of the life and works of the Great Emancipator. After reading them we feel as though we had lived with Lincoln, talked with him, shared in his sufferings and rejoicings, and had known him from the cradle to the grave. In fact, Lincoln no longer seems dead, but as one of the most real and living persons we have ever known. Excerpt from Religious Views of Abraham Lincoln The author feels that no apology is needed in giving out this booklet to the public. For seven years, he has sought to lay under tribute everything which might give light upon the subject herein discussed. He has received a letter from Hon. Robert Lincoln which confirms many statements contained in this work. Much could be said of the claims made by Spiritualists in insisting that Lincoln looked with favor upon their peculiar doctrine. Likewise, the Universalists have come in to announce that Mr. Lincoln threw out friendly glances at them. The author has sufficient material upon the religious glimpses of Lincoln to fill a five hundred page volume. Had the book been swelled to a full grown work, the price would have limited its sale and many would never read it because of its size. The author feels that confining the matter in these humble limits, will do more in enlightening people in regard to what Mr. Lincoln believed in spiritual things than in a more pretentious work. He has been compelled to waive the discussions and claims made by exponents of different doctrines, and devote the entire work to the question whether Abraham Lincoln was a Christian or an Atheist. No thought of money-making has prompted the attempt to give out this work. The price has been placed at such a figure to assure neither loss nor gain to the writer. Hoping that by placing our ear near the heart of our great martyr, we may be able to hear him sing his songs in the night. Not long after Lincoln's assassination, the debate began: Was Lincoln a committed Christian or a confirmed skeptic? Scholar Philip Ostergard provides the answer with a thorough study of the president's references to God, the Bible, and Christian principles in his letters and speeches. The Inspired Wisdom of Abraham Lincoln illustrates the depth of Lincoln's knowledge of Scripture; the Bible's influence on his character; and the development of his faith, particularly as he wrestled with the issue of slavery and led the nation through the tumultuous years of the Civil War. Readers will find this a fascinating and inspiring handbook of answers to the questions about one of our greatest presidents.
