Excerpt from A System of Physical Chemistry, Vol. 1 of 3 As regards the thermodynamical treatment, it will be seen that the concept of maximum wor and free energy has been employed practically to the exclusion of others. I have found by experience that this is more easily grasped than the idea of entropy, although I suppose that ultimately this must be something of a mental delusion. Excerpt from A System of Physical Chemistry, Vol. 2 of 3 IN this edition the Opportunity has been taken of making certain corrections which have been kindly brought to my notice by various correspondents. In addition a certain amount of new material has been incorporated so as to bring the book up to date as far as possible. The principal additions are: in Chapter VII, the emf. Method of determining the transport number of an ion as employed by macinnes and Parker, an account of the investigation of Richards and Daniells on thallium amalgam cells, and Tolman's work on centrifugal cells; in Chapter VIII, an extended section dealing with ionic activity and ionisation, chiefly the work of the American School of Physical Chemistry. The problem of the activity of undissociated molecules is also considered. In Chapter XI, a résumé of the experimental evidence for Donnan's theory of membrane equilibria is given, and a fairly full account of the concept of the micelle in elec trolytic colloids. Excerpt from The Elements of Physical Chemistry The object of this book is to present the elements of the entire subject of Physical Chemistry in one volume, together with the important and but little known applications of it to the other branches of chemistry. Many persons have found it difficult to obtain a comprehensive outline of the subject, owing to the length of time which it has been necessary to spend upon the separate volumes devoted to special portions of it. To all such this volume may be of value. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Text-Book of Physical Chemistry Excepting the chapter on Phases, this book represents what I have been in the habit of teaching the Senior Class in the Chemical Course at Rutgers College. I find lectures very unsatisfactory. The subject needs much thought, and the student does not seem able to get the proper material for this from notes, unless the lectures are made mere dictations. Besides, Physical Chemistry has attained such development that it is well to put a certain part of it in permanent text book form now, for whatsoever changes in our views time may bring, certain ideas we now have will not change. These fundamental ideas I have tried to put into this little book. Of course, I have also included some theories and ideas that later on may have to be rejected. That cannot be helped. Excerpt from The Journal of Physical Chemistry, 1896-1897, Vol. 1 In all cases the maximum reading of the electromotive force of the cell was taken, for all the cells measured were found to increase rather quickly to a maximum, which remained constant for a time. Most of the cells reached a maximum reading in about an hour, while some of the cells, especially the sulphate cells, might require two or three hours. In a few cases the maximum was reached in fifteen or twenty minutes. However, the time for any particular cell was not in the least constant. Throughout this whole paper twentieth normal solutions are always used when no concentration is specified. Excerpt from A System of Chemistry, Vol. 1 of 4 I thought it necessary, in consequence of these great changes and improvements, to new model this Edition entirely. Indeed almost the whole of the first two volumes, which contain the elementary part of the science, has been written anew. I have been at great pains to introduce every new fact, as far as I was acquainted with it, and to present the science to my readers in its most recent state. The work has passed so rapidly throu h the press, that it has been unnecessary to add any appen whatever, no facts of suflicient importance, of which I was ignorant when we began to print, having come to my know ledge since, except such as I was able to introduce at least nearly into their proper places. Thus the thorina of Berzelius was unknown to me when the chapter on aim le combustibles in the first volume was printing; but I was stiii able to place it at the end of that chapter. Morphia of Sertiirner was unknown to me while treating of the alkalies; but I have been able at least to place it among the vegetable principles; where it unlit always continue to figure. Excerpt from The Journal of Physical Chemistry, 1910, Vol. 14 The bath was regulated to within C. The method Of procedure was as follows. The picnometers were filled with the solution to be measured at a temperature somewhat lower than 2 Fine rubber tubes, filled with the solution, were then drawn over the capillaries and the whole immersed in the bath with the ends of the rubber tubes coming out of the water. It was found that the temperature Of the solu tion became constant within half an hour. The rubber tubes were then removed, allowing only the capillaries to come above the surface Of the water. The drops were carefully flicked Off, the stoppers put on, the whole apparatus was carefully wiped, and the picnometer hung in the balance case. The water used in this research was distilled from a solu tion Of alkaline permanganate through a block-tin condenser and then redistilled immediately before use. Standing in glass a few days increased sensibly the specific gravity. The air was sucked out Of the solutions by connecting the picnom eter with the vacuum pump. Kahlbaum's dry chemicals and Baker 81 Adamson's acids were used without further purification. A solution Of the material to be investigated was made up stronger than required and analyzed carefully. From these stock solutions there were prepared by dilution the solutions actually employed in the measurements.
