Background of the Study Modern age is the age of competition in all walks of life either it is academic or vast arena of non-academic fields. Therefore, success in every field is determined by performance. The concept of performance refers to how well the given task is completed against the set standards. Previous studies consistently demonstrate a positive relationship between different and separate student engagement domains (behavioural, emotional, and cognitive) and academic achievement. However, research examining the simultaneous causal effect of all three student engagement domains on academic achievement is sparse. Investigating the simultaneous impact of all three domains on academic achievement may provide a more complete and natural insight into the role of student engagement within the learning process, since these domains act together in real life. The primary objective of this study was to identify the relationship between three domains of student engagement and academic achievement, controlled for selected potential confounders such as teacher support, peer support, school environment, and student demographic characteristics. The design of the second and main study, which examined the relationship between engagement and achievement, and whether the relationship suggests causal effect, included two points of data collection over one academic year (before and after), from student self-report questionnaires and students' achievement from the school database. The sample comprised three urban secondary schools (1,617 students from Year 7 to Year 9). Contradictory to findings in the literature, the findings suggest that student engagement is positively associated with academic achievement, but they did not support evidence for causal effects. Those findings remained regardless of whether or not selected potential confounders such as teacher support, peer support, school environment, and background variables of the student were considered. In addition, although school environment and gender had a small impact on the relationship between engagement and achievement, they are unlikely to be considered confounders of the association. The findings of the current study, which are contradictory to the literature, are discussed and several content and methodological explanations are offered. Implications of the findings for policy makers, school principals and teachers, and for future research are also discussed.

Section I: Background of the study The Indian school education system in the last few decades has gone on to make their mark in diverse fields of national and international life. There are diverse aspects of our educational system, particularly the school system that are lacking to make a significant impact. It is characterized by inflexibility where learning is unconnected with the students' 2 life and this in turn has led to the neglect of students' present abilities and increase in their difficulties (NCERT, 2006). The National focus Group of the NCERT (2006) further points out that the Indian School Education System is a monolithic system that has resulted in a set of practices for the development of curriculum, syllabus and textbooks rather focused on the requirements of the examination system than the child's learning requirement, aims of education and the socioeconomic and cultural contexts of learners. It further highlights the fact that educational practices in school are a dull routine, characterized by bored teachers and students, and a rote system of learning. Performance in academics requires all aspects of the students' wellbeing such as psychological behavioral, emotional, physical and social. Students who are physically and psychologically stable and strong tend to perform better when compared to those who are not. In other words, those who are experiencing psychological problems face difficulties in their academic performance. Hence, psychological stability turns out to be an important predictor of high academic achievement. Understanding aspects of the self, particularly of students who are low achievers is critical, due to the large number of children who are left behind and the social ramifications that result from poor education. In a country like India, with a population over a billion, the demand the school going population places on the limited resources, government policies and the type of delivery all gain special significance when the students' academic life and career is taken into consideration. The study examines the influence of parental influence and career-related variables on academic achievement being one of the fundamental factors in educational and career development process that paves way to the translation of career choice, interest and goals into action directly and indirectly through the mediation of academic self-efficacy and educational aspiration. The study was based on the theoretical foundation of Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) and Donald Super theory of career development. The study used a valid sample of 502 drawn through stratified random sampling technique from 28 randomly selected secondary schools in three metropolitan educational zones. Data was collected using a questionnaire that measured seven constructs. However, data collected was analyzed using SPSS version 20 and Amos Software version 18. Path analysis was employed in analysing the data and findings reveal that parental education and parental academic motivation as component of parental influence significantly and positively affect academic self-efficacy while all parental education and parental involvement significantly and positively influence educational aspiration. On the other hand, only vocational outcome expectation as a component of career-related component variables significantly and positively influenced academic self-efficacy. However, no significant direct relationships between academic self-efficacy, educational aspiration and academic achievement were found. Moreover, no mediation effect of academic self-efficacy and educational aspiration in the relationship between parental influence, career-related variables and academic achievement. Theoretically, the findings of the study support the preposition of SCCT involving strong correlation between vocational outcome expectation and self-efficacy. The study provides a ground for new policy initiatives to connect guidance with major public policy to enhance educational efficiency and outcome for young people. The study recommends that school administrators' should improve parental involvement by bridging the gap between home and school and ensure that functional guidance and counselling services are provided to cater for the students' educational, career and personal needs.
