Excerpt from A Statistical Account of the British Empire, Vol. 2 of 2: Exhibiting Its Extent, Physical Capacities, Population, Industry, and Civil and Religious Institutions But on Coal. A duty on sea-borne coal was imposed in the reign of Wil liam l L, and continued till 1830. A duty of this sort fell, of course, principall on London and the southern and south-eastern counties, and was not at all felt in the coal districts, or in those places to which coal could be conveyed by inland carriage! It is impossible, in fact, to imagine a more partial, unequal, and oppressive impost. At the period of its repeal it amounted to 63. A chaldron, and produced about a year. Duties appropriated for local purposes are still charged on the cod imported into London and some other ports.
