Onondaga is a member of the Northern branch of the Iroquoian family. It is spoken in Ontario, Canada and New York State in the United States. It is a highly endangered language with only a small handful of speakers, mostly over 60. Like other Iroquoian languages, Onondaga has a small phonemic inventory, but a rich inflectional and derivational morphology. It is a polysynthetic language with noun incorporation, subject and object agreement, and numerous morphological resources expressing both compositional and non-compositional meanings. Word order is rather free, but certain regularities are noted. The grammar aims to be theoretically neutral and draws data as much as possible from naturalistic data as possible. As Northern Iroquoian languages are closely related, comparisons to other Northern Iroquoian languages are made periodically. The Cherokees have the oldest and best-known Native American writing system in the United States. Invented by Sequoyah and made public in 1821, it was rapidly adopted, leading to nineteenth-century Cherokee literacy rates as high as 90 percent. This writing system, the Cherokee syllabary, is fully explained and used throughout this volume, the first and only complete published grammar of the Cherokee language. Although the Cherokee Reference Grammar focuses on the dialect spoken by the Cherokees in Oklahoma—the Cherokee Nation and the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians—it provides the grammatical foundation upon which all the dialects are based. In his introduction, author Brad Montgomery-Anderson offers a brief account of Cherokee history and language revitalization initiatives, as well as instructions for using this grammar. The book then delves into an explanation of Cherokee pronunciation, orthography, parts of speech, and syntax. While the book is intended as a reference grammar for experienced scholars, Montgomery-Anderson presents the information in accessible stages, moving from easier examples to more complex linguistic structures. Examples are taken from a variety of sources, including many from the Cherokee Phoenix. Audio clips of various text examples throughout can be found on the accompanying CDs. Comprehensive bilingual dictionary of the Hoc?k language. The most comprehensive dictionary of the Hoc?k language (formerly known as Winnebago) to date, this bidirectional Hoc?k-English/English-Hoc?k dictionary contains approximately 4,000 entries. Hoc?k is a highly endangered North American Indian language spoken by less than two hundred people in different parts of Wisconsin and Nebraska. This dictionary and volume 2 of the Hoc?k Teaching Materials are the outcome of a large project on the documentation of the Hoc?k language, which was carried out in close cooperation with the Hoc?k Language Division, a tribal institution for the stabilization and revitalization of the Hoc?k language in Mauston, Wisconsin. The volume contains a lengthy introduction to the basics of the phonology, orthography, and morphology of the Hoc?k language, written in a learner-friendly, easy-to-access style, explaining linguistic terms so that it can be used by nonlinguists. The individual lexical entries of the words are organized according to the standards of modern lexicography, containing all necessary phonetic, grammatical, and semantic information for the use of the Hoc?k words. In addition, every word is provided with about three Hoc?k example sentences in order to demonstrate the typical use of the words in different contexts. Also of interest are a frequency list of all words in the dictionary counted on the basis of a large corpus of Hoc?k texts, and a thesaurus of all Hoc?k words in the dictionary. Wappo is an indigenous language, generally regarded as a language isolate, which was once spoken in the Russian River Valley, just north of San Francisco, California.
