A previously reported observation of electrons produced in proton-proton collisions at the CERN ISR was extended to 5 different center-of-mass energies ($Root$s = 23.5, 30.6, 44.8, 52.7 and 62.4 GeV). The apparatus detected electrons with transverse momenta, p*/sub T/, greater than 1.0 GeV/c. The ratio of the electron to pion cross sections in the kinematic region is approximately 10$sup -4$. The momentum spectrum and particle composition of particles emitted with $delta$phi approximately 180$sup 0$ relative to the electrons are found to be similar to those emitted with pions. Results at p*/sub T/ less than 1 GeV/c are presented in another work. (auth).

The previously reported observation of direct electrons produced in proton-proton collisions at the CERN ISR was extended to transverse moments, p*/ sub T/, as low as 0.6 GeV/c. The ratio of electron to pion cross sections seems to rise as p*/sub T/ is decreased. It increases by at most a factor of 2 between p*/sub T/ of 2 and 0.6 GeV/c. Results on the s-dependence of this ratio and on correlated charged particles are presented for p*/sub T/ greater than or equal to 1 GeV/c in another work. (auth).

As part of a study of large p/sub T/ phenomena in proton-proton collisions at the CERN ISR, a search for direct single photon production has been performed. A statistical division of the data sample into the fraction consistent with single photon production and the fraction due to multiphoton decays of neutral hadrons is accomplished by measuring the average conversion probability for the sample in a one radiation length thick converter. The fraction of the sample attributable to direct single photon production is .gamma./all = 0.074 +- 0.012 for 6 GeV/c = 0.26 +- 0.04 for p/sub T/> 10 GeV/c, with an additional systematic uncertainty of +- 0.05 for both values. It is found that single photons are produced preferentially with no accompanying particles on the same side. The ratio of positive to negative particles on the away side is found to be 3.7 +- 1.2 at high x/sub E/ and p/sub T/ for the single photon events.

Experimental results on a search for charmed particle production in proton-proton collisions at the center of mass energy (.sqrt.s) of 53 GeV are presented. Evidence of cidences, a signature of charmed particle production, was sought. The inclusive e/.pi. ratio was measured with a magnetic spectrometer located at 32° from Beam 1 of Intersection I6 of the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR). The e/.pi. ratio from direct (unknown) sources was found to rise from 1.06 x 10−4 at p/sub perpendicular to/ = 1.5 GeV/c to 5.53 x 10−4 at p/sub perpendicular to/ = 0.25 GeV/c. One possible source for this signal is the semi-leptonic decay of charmed particles (e.g., D .-->. K° e.nu.). If so, then electron-strange particle (e.g., .lambda.°, K°) coincidences are expected. The charged decay products of .lambda.° and K° were detected in a multiparticle spectrometer surrounding Beam 1 downstream of the intersection. To determine if there is an electron-strange particle correlation, the number of .lambda.°'s (K°'s) in coincidence with an electron in the 32° spectrometer was compared with the number of .lambda.'s (K°'s) in coincidence with a hadron in the same kinematic range. No evidence for an enhanced production of strange particles with electrons relative to hadrons was found. However, given the acceptance of the apparatus, the absence of a signal is consistent with current models of charmed particle production and decay. 40 references, 51 figures, 20 tables.
