Excerpt: ... thing as this happened: as soon as the corn took fire, driven by the wind, it seized the Temple of Minerva, called Assessian, and the Temple going on fire was burned to the ground; for the present they thought nothing about it, but afterwards, when the army returned to Sardis, Alyattes fell sick, and the disease being tedious he sent to the oracle of Delphi, either some one having advised him or it seemed right to himself, to send and consult the god concerning the disease, but when the messengers arrived at Delphi, the priestess said she would not give a response until they re-built the Temple of Minerva, which they had burned at Assessum, in the Milesian territory. 20--I know that these things were so, having heard it at Delphi, and the Milesians add these things to that already mentioned. That Periander the son of Cypselus, having heard the response that was given to Alyattes, sent a messenger to tell Thrasybulus, who was then tyrant of Miletus, with whom he was in intimate friendship, that having known something of it beforehand, he should devise some plan in the present conjuncture; now the Milesians say that thus it was managed 21.--Alyattes, when these things were announced, immediately sent a herald to Miletus desiring to make a league, with Thrasybulus and the Milesians, for as long a time as the temple would be in building; now the messenger arrived at Miletus, but Thrasybulus having previously known every word, and well aware what Alyattes was about to do, made up the following plan--having brought all the corn in the city, both of his own and of private individuals into the market, he ordered the Milesians when he would give the sign, they should all begin to drink and indulge in conviviality with one another. 22 Now, ..
