Excerpt from History of Fox-Hunting: In the From Country and Part This Shropshire From the Beginning of This Century to the End of the Season of 1884-85 Out hunting in 1749, but we are not told with whose hounds he was hunting, or what was the animal he was pursuing. The story goes that this Sir Watkin's second wife, a daughter of Sir Charles Shakerley, said to have been his own god-daughter, moreover young and beautiful, dreamed that her husband was killed out hunting, and begged him not to go out on that day. He had half promised to do as she wished, for youth and beauty will have an influence on us all, when a good-natured friend intervened, and persuaded him that if he listened to all the fancies of his wife he would soon have to give up all his amusements his argument prevailed, Sir Watkin went out, got safely through the run, but in crossing a field at Acton, near Wrexham (the seat of Sir Robert Cunliffe), on his return home, his horse making a peck, pitched him on his head, which came in contact with the only stone in the field.
