Excerpt from A Field Ornithology of the Birds of Eastern North America This book, begun six years ago, has greatly exceeded in number of pages the original intentions of the author, but this will not, he trust, prove disadvantageous to the reader. As the title indicates, all the birds, excepting perhaps a few very recently described forms, which occur between the North Pole and the Gulf of Mexico, east of the Mississippi River, are given. As the natural geographical western avifaunal boundaries are the Great Plains, most of the species which occur east of them are herein included. In its scope as an exponent of field characters it may be regarded as a companion to my Directory to the Birds of Eastern North America. Excerpt from A List of the Birds of Eastern North America Which occur in New England, Illinois, and Florida. Taking these States to form the points of an imaginary triangle, a somewhat crude idea of the range of species which occur within this area may be obtained, as it is evident that birds which occur in Illinois, New England, and Florida must, in all probability, also occur in most of the intermediate States; whereas those which are recorded from only one of these localities would probably be species which only touched within the limits of this area during their migrations, or birds of comparatively local distribution. Of course, a number of the species do not occur in either New England, Illinois, or Florida, as the list includes all birds which are known. Excerpt from The Birds of Eastern North America, Known to Occur East of the Nineteenth Meridian: Key to the Families and Species All measurements of birds are given in inches and fractions of an inch. The diagrams on page 8 will illustrate how a bird should be measured, and the chart (pages viii and ix) will be useful to the young student of ornithology who may not be familiar with the technical terms used in describing birds. Such terms as primaries and axillars should be learned at once. It is customary to indicate the sexes by the signs of Mars and Venus; the male, of course, being given that of Mars, 3, and the female, Venus, 9. Excerpt from Birds of Eastern North America This volume is in reality but an extension of, an enlargement upon and a combining of the "show me" properties of "Bird Guide - Land Birds" and "Bird Guide - Water Birds." The kind reception and enormous sale of these smaller books have fully justified my belief that a good, accurate illustration is worth pages of text for conveying an idea of the appearance, of a bird or for identifying one seen in the field. My schooling in this line was gained in the time when an occasional inaccurate woodcut served only to relieve the monotony of the solid pages of text. In those days the birds were "collected" and, with the specimen in hand, it required only time to discover what it was, from the pages of the old reliable "Coues' Key." Birds were more plentiful then and bird students comparatively few. Obviously such methods are impossible now when the birds are fewer and students numbered by the hundreds of thousands. A good pair of bird glasses and a good book will enable the bird student now to see and identify hundreds of species, and that without harming the creatures in the least. In fact, several enthusiasts have written me that they became so familiar with the. birds by means of pictures that upon visiting new localities and seeing new birds they were able to correctly name nearly all at first sight without referring to a book. Bird study is not a fad. It is a recreation and a most useful one. Its importance is shown by the fact that it is one of the requirements of teachers in nearly all states.
