I wanted to explore the heart and soul of Europe on my twenty-country road trip and provide the reader with some history, humor, good stories, and a little philosophizing. In this book, I try to transport my reader into another world they may or may not ever occupy themselves; take them on a road trip they may only dream about. I try to keep my book positive, adventuresome, humorous, and fun to read. Travels, even if along the same path, are all different and they all have their own personalities. What you have to accept in order to enjoy traveling to the max is that you do not take a trip--a trip takes you. I have always been very good at understanding and accepting this. It's also important to consider the lifespan of your journey. This seems to be variable and unpredictable. Who has not known a journey to be over and dead before the traveler returns? The reverse is also true; many a trip continues long after the journey has ended. My road trip in Europe has always stayed with me--you will know why by the final page of this book. This was one of the best road trips of the many I have taken in my life. I was a different and a much better person at the conclusion of the trip, and I learned a lot about myself, Europeans, and Europe. I hope you enjoy reading about my road trip as much as I enjoyed living it.

Wow, so I have to come up with something here to entice the cool person who happened to click on this page? Basically it is Europe, in a car, in less than a month. No gimmicks! Bill Bryson for a younger crowd perhaps? (said me, the author, just now!) I am a traveler writing, not a writer traveling. I didn't go round nude or with a film crew. None of this staying in villas and castles with private chefs, none of this schlepping on a train and living in hostels without washing (although between you and me I think I did wear the same underwear two days in a row as we couldn't find a laundry place) Just making the most of an extremely modest budget showing that anyone can have a (bleeping!) great time out there if you're willing to give it a go. Hopefully this will encourage you to get out to places and also perhaps discourage you from going to certain places. Oh yes, none of that sugar coating malarkey here my amigos; if something is rubbish you will hear about it. There are some tourist hot spots, some standard bucket list places and activities and then some places that are not such tourist hot spots: Sometimes rightly so, but more often than not these places were hidden gems. Anywhere foreign and new is exciting, surely? It can't just be me, right? Everyday we tried to do something different and make the most of it. No more than $75 (50 quid) was spent on accommodation and most times we had comfort for plenty less. And never once had to share a loo or shower! Almost a dozen countries (er...so 11), 6000 kilometres of driving in just over three weeks and a bunch of affordable activities. This wasn't all museums and religious sites. This was sphereing, bobsleighing, Formula 1, rugby, spas, beaches, eating, festivals, crashing and drowning. OK, so there was one church; it felt right to go considering it was on the way to Oktoberfest. Any help ahead of that carnage is always appreciated! But NO museums.

August 1918, a group of friends gathers in Western Pennsylvania for a two-week camping road trip, but these were not ordinary friends-and this was no ordinary time. A Chance to Breathe follows Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, John Burroughs, and Harvey Firestone, along with a caravan of vehicles and a slew of helpers, on their thousand-mile journey through the heart of America a little over a century ago. Their unlikely and fascinating friendships are matched only by their individual stories. Traversing the countryside by car, the famous campers would be some of the first participants in what would later become a traditional summer staple known as The Great American Road Trip. Having largely invented the modern world, these "vagabonds" were hoping, at least for a moment, to escape it. And who could blame them? Life in 1918 was exhausting. World War One raged in Europe while humanity braced for yet another wave of the Spanish Flu, which in the end, would prove to be more like a tsunami. Racing through America's first frontier, the story of Appalachia and West Virginia are brought to light, as are the stories of the people and places encountered along the way. In the end, A Chance to Breathe is a story of friendship, adventure, and the indomitable human spirit.
