The purpose of the study was to compare selected high school students' learning styles and attitudes towards an adventure education unit and a fitness unit. The sample included 34 male and female students from a Midwest high school. The subjects were divided into two groups. Group one (N= 21) participated in a ten class adventure unit followed by a ten class fitness unit. Group two (N= 13) participated in a ten class fitness unit followed by a ten class adventure unit. All of the participants completed Kolb's learning style inventory and a pre-treatment attitude instrument. Upon completion of each treatment, the students' attitudes were assessed via a modified attitude instrument specific to each treatment. The attitude instrument was a modified version of the Adam's Scale survey (Adams, 1963). A one-way ANOVA yielded no significant difference between learning style and student's attitude toward an adventure unit (P=.840) or a fitness unit (P=.617). Teachers should consider ways for all students to develop positive attitudes toward the content being taught in high school physical education classes regardless of individual learning styles. Further research is suggested to support the use of learning styles in the physical education setting.

This study was designed to determine if students' attitudes toward physical education change after being exposed to an adventure education, fitness, and sport education units. The sample included (N=41) with class one containing 23 subjects and class two 18. The length of the study was 30 class periods/days long. Class one (N=23) was given a pretest followed by posttests after experiencing a 10 day adventure education unit, fitness unit and sport education unit. Class two (N=18) was given a pretest followed by posttests after participating in the opposite order of units that class one was given. The three factors identified within the survey were the teacher, curriculum usefulness, and curriculum enjoyment. The factor scores were computed for each student, every time they took the survey. Repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed to determine if differences existed between the classes. A significance level of a = .05 was used in all statistical analyses. When averaging across the four survey time points, there is no significant difference between the two classes. However, when considering the survey time points individually - pretest, adventure education, sport education, and fitness there were significant differences between the two classes.

Students with behavior disorders were recruited from an alternative education center in La Crosse, WI, to participate in a 6 week, 11 hour ropes course unit to study its effect on their attitudes to physical activity. The instructional program contained adventure activities, indoor rock climbing, and high and low ropes course elements. Ten students were recruited, of these 3 dropped out and 1 did not participate in any of the climbing portions of the unit and was not included in the final statistical analysis. Data were gathered using a modified survey originally designed to measure the attitudes of adults toward physical activity. Results showed a general trend of improvement in attitude towards physical activity, but a paired t-test did not show significance at the 0.05 confidence level. Attendance and attitude improvement was not highly correlated with an r value 0.34.

Physical inactivity is a key determinant of health across the lifespan. A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment.
