Download Sex Without Consent Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
The pressing need to break the silence on non-consensual sex among young people – an issue shrouded by denial, underreporting and stigma – is self-evident. Despite the growing body of research regarding young people’s sexual behaviours, the study of coercive sexual experiences has generally been overlooked by both researchers and national programmes. Available evidence has been scattered and unrepresentative and despite this evidence, non-consensual sex among young people is perceived to be a rare occurrence. This volume dispels any such misconception. It presents a disturbing picture of non-consensual sex among girls as well as boys, and among married as well as unmarried young women in a variety of settings. This volume documents, moreover, the expanse of non-consensual experiences that young people face – from unwanted touch to forced penetrative sex and gang rape. Although the focus is on young females, the volume also sheds light on the experience of young males as both victims and perpetrators. This pioneering volume highlights key factors placing young people at risk, whilst outlining the significant distinctive health and social implications they face. Sex Without Consent also documents the unsupportive – and sometimes abusive or negligent – roles of families, teachers, health care providers and law enforcement agents, outlines promising efforts intended to prevent non-consensual sex or support survivors, and argues for profound changes in norms and values that tolerate or encourage non-consensual sex. The editors, based at the Population Council (New Delhi), the World Health Organization (Geneva), and Family Health International (Virginia) argue compellingly for a radical review and reform of existing programmes designed to prevent this kind of abuse and to support young survivors of sexual trauma in the developing world. Addressing the magnitude, determinants and consequences of sex without consent, this volume provides evidence-based directions for programming.

"This study examines wife abuse in Thai families. It identifies the major causes and social effects, the responses of service agencies and critically analyses those responses. The result is the development of an alternative way to prevent and respond to domestic violence that is appropriate for Thailand. A qualitative research method was used with purposive sampling method to select participants. Abused wives, the respondents from service agencies, and the policy makers were interviewed by using semi-structured interviews. The data displayed in descriptions, tables, and figures. Thai women typically encounter more than one kind of abuse. Physical abuse is the most common kind of abuse, followed by psychological abuse. The key factors contributing to wife abuse were personal characteristics of the husband and cultural factors followed by economic, sexual and substance abuse triggers. The research acknowledges Thai society's efforts to establish broader public awareness on domestic violence and wife abuse and gender equality, empowering Thai women to be self-confident, socially and economically independent and equal with men before the law. New ways of considering domestic violence in Thailand can generate multidimensional intervention approaches that appropriately address the complexity of wife abuse. Community-based engagement and support can play a greater role in protecting and assisting victims and witness of wife abuse. The victims of abuse and families are central to any intervention and therefore their participation in program development is necessary."--Abstract.

Download HIV/AIDS and the Social Consequences of Untamed Biomedicine Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Drawing on the case of HIV/AIDS in Thailand, this book examines how anthropological and other interpretative social science research has been utilized in modeling the AIDS epidemic, and in the design and implementation of interventions. It argues that much social science research has been complicit with the forces that generated the epidemic and with the social control agendas of the state, and that as such it has increased the weight of structural violence bearing upon the afflicted. The book also questions claims of Thai AIDS control success, arguing that these can only be made at the cost of excluding categories such as intravenous drug users, the incarcerated, and homosexuals, who continue to experience extraordinarily high levels of levels of HIV infection. Considered deviant and undeserving, these persons have deliberately been excluded from harm reduction programs. Overall, this work argues for the untapped potential of anthropological research in the health field, a confident anthropology rooted in ethnography and a critical reflexivity. Crucially, it argues that in context of interdisciplinary collaborations, anthropological research must refuse relegation to the status of an adjunct discipline, and must be free epistemologically and methodologically from the universalizing assumptions and practices of biomedicine.

Download Domestic Violence and Health Care in India Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This book discusses health care issues related to domestic violence, using extensive case studies from India. By discussing the global literature, legal systems, methodological challenges of gathering information on domestic violence, and health systems issues, along with learnings from case studies, it fills a significant gap in the literature between health care policy and practice vis-à-vis victims of domestic violence. It therefore enables a systemic and systematic response to incidents of domestic violence. Policy instructions, court verdicts, government interventions, community-based direct interventions and related case discussions in the book help in the understanding and management of cases. Though the book uses case studies from India, it addresses globally relevant issues for health care professionals. In view of the paucity of application of systematic evidence-based knowledge, the holistic perspective presented in the book is important to prevent domestic violence, protect women’s rights, and promote healthcare and wellbeing of women and children facing domestic violence. Medical professionals are expected to intervene in instances of injuries related to domestic violence---a responsibility that they are currently unable to fulfil due to lack of training in recognizing abuse and lack of tools for intervention. This book improves hands-on-knowledge by providing information on where to refer victims for assistance and timely intervention. Comprehensive yet lucid, this book is useful for academics, policy makers, non-government organizations and women’s rights groups in helping victims during and after a violent episode and also in improving reporting and referral services.

Download Abusing Images Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Describes a line of comic books in Thailand which represents, directly or symbolically, many aspects of culture typically of interest to anthropologists. Indicates patterns in the way that women and men are portrayed with images of violence in the context of heterosexual and marital relations. Questions are raised regarding the role popular culture plays in disseminating and representing gender ideology. Also assesses the possibility that cartoons may provide a productive arena for challenging and helping eliminate domestic abuse against women.

Download Analysis of Delinquency and Aggression Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Originally published in 1976, this volume is organized about two central themes: the experimental analysis of aggression, and the application of learning principles to the prevention and modification of delinquency. The chapters, all new and original at the time, demonstrate how the problems of aggression, which had been interpreted in diverse ways, can be analyzed under controlled laboratory conditions. In addition, the contributors offer an explanation of how behavior modification techniques, derived from this knowledge, can be used for preventive purposes. Because of the social nature of aggression and delinquency, behavior change techniques were principally aimed at modifying environmental influences. The contributions to this volume illustrate how behavioral scientists may aid in the understanding and amelioration of conditions that give rise to violence. Today it can be read and enjoyed in its historical context.
