Free Access in January 2019 There has been an increasing interest in the emerging subfield within linguistics and anthropology often referred to as community-based research (Himmelmann 1998, Rice 2010, Crippen and Robinson 2013, among others). This volume brings together perspectives from academics, community members, and those that find themselves in both academia and the community. The volume begins with a working definition of the notions of community-based research as a practice and illustrates how such notions shifted, without abandoning the outlined tenets within the working definition, as the chapters developed to include notions of community-based research as a tool and ideology as well as an orientation. Each of the 17 chapters represents a case-study with the first five including discussions of broader issues and theoretical perspectives while exploring community-based research as an emerging subfield within linguistics. The case-studies comprise work from the Americas, Australia, India, Europe, and Africa. The original and creative pedagogical method used in this textbook--teaching the Omaha language through Omaha culture--consists of a structured series of lesson plans. First published in 1928, "Coming of Age in Samoa" is Margaret Mead's classic sociological examination of adolescence during the first part of the 20th century in American Samoa. Sent by the Social Science Research Council to study the youths of a so-called "primitive" culture, Margaret Mead would spend nine months attempting to ascertain if the problems of adolescences in western society were merely a function of youth or a result of cultural and social differences. "Coming of Age in Samoa" is her report of those findings, in which the author details various aspects of Samoan life including, education, social and household structure, and sexuality. The book drew great public interest when it was first published and also criticism from those who did not like the perceived message that the carefree sexuality of Samoan girls might be the reason for their lack of neuroses. "Coming of Age in Samoa" has also been criticized for the veracity of Mead's account, though current public opinion seems to fall on the side of her work being largely a factual one, if not one of great anthropological rigor. At the very least "Coming of Age in Samoa" remains an interesting historical account of tribal Samoan life during the first part of the 20th century. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.

The goal of this book is to explore the relationship between the cognitive notion of parthood and various grammatical devices expressing this concept in natural language. The monograph aims to investigate syntactic constructions and lexical categories, e.g., partitives, whole-adjectives, and multipliers, encoding different kinds of part-whole structures both in Slavic and non-Slavic languages. It is envisioned to inspire radical rethinking of the ontology of models accounting for nominal semantics. Specifically, it provides novel evidence for a mereotopological approach to meaning, i.e., a theory of wholes that captures not only parthood but also topological relations holding between parts. This evidence comes from the phenomenon of subatomic quantification, i.e., quantification over parts of referents of concrete count nouns.
