Ten Poems to Open Your Heart is a book devoted to love: to the intimacy of personal love and lovemaking, to a loving compassion for others, and to the love that embraces both this world and the next. This new volume from Roger Housden features a few of the same poets as his extraordinarily moving Ten Poems to Change Your Life, such as Mary Oliver and Pablo Neruda, along with contributions from Sharon Olds, Wislawa Szymborska, Czeslaw Milosz, Denise Levertov, and others. Any one of the ten poems and, indeed, any one of Housden’s reflections on them, can open, gladden, or pierce your heart. Through the voices of these ten inspiring poets, and through illustrations from his own life, Housden expresses the tenderness, beauty, joys, and sorrows of love, the presence of which, more than anything else, gives human existence its meaning. As Housden says in his eloquent introduction, “Great poetry happens when the mind is looking the other way and words fall from the sky to shape a moment that would normally be untranslatable. . . . When the heart opens, we forget ourselves and the world pours in: this world, and also the invisible world of meaning that sustains everything that was and ever shall be.” From the Hardcover edition.

Volume II of Major Poems of the Hebrew Bible deals with 85 Psalms (83 poems) and the poems in Job 4-14, and aims at presenting an integrated prosodical theory which is able to bypass the highly controversial question of metrics. There are two approaches which initially are kept apart on grounds of method: structural analysis and the counting of the original, i.e. pre-Masoretic, syllables. Each poem receives a compact description of structure which gives a reasoned delimitation of cola, verses, and strophes. In a separate operation, the syllable counts for each word, colon, verse, strophe, stanza, section and poem are recorded in a comprehensive Appendix. All the poems under discussion show a precise integer as the average of syllables per colon. For half of them this is 8.00, the others have either 7.00 or 9.00. The 9.00 is a ceiling: there is no Psalm with a higher average. Combining the two approaches, the author shows that the poets themselves did count their syllables, and how they were able to mesh the syllable figures with the structural units of their compositions in a virtuoso combination. The greatest challenge of this enterprise is to delimit and objectify the correct colometry for all the songs, as the figure of syllables per colon depends on the right amount of cola. There are only about 30 Psalms which have a cola figure that can be considered beyond doubt. Fortunately, in the Book of Job the correct number of cola is certain for most chapters. Here we meet the number 8 again as a normative figure

"The reputation of Thomas Sheridan has probably suffered from the occasional ridicule of his longtime friend and collaborator Jonathan Swift. Nevertheless, Swift valued Sheridan's wit and company immensely, and the verse-warfares in which the two friends often indulged were not always won by Swift." "Sheridan was not only one of the most memorable Dubliners of the early eighteenth century. Convivial, charming, highspirited, and feckless, he was also a prominent schoolmaster (the best in Europe, according to Swift), cleric, translator, playwright, essayist, and a prolific writer of accomplished light verse. Called Tom Pun-Sibi, or Tom the Punster, because of his droll essay The Art of Punning, he poured forth a seemingly endless stream of punning satires, verse letters to his friends, and satirical observations on the Dublin of his day." "For all of his prolific output, only some of his Swift poems have remained in print, and they are in various editions of Swift's verse. This volume gathers together for the first time Sheridan's complete poetic works, including those published as broadsides or in contemporary journals and those contained in unpublished letters and manuscripts. Of particular interest for such a social poet is the inclusion of poems to and about Sheridan by his many friends and very vocal enemies."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. "'Tis an epic ode to the Bay State from pilgrims to Poe in thirty multi-stanza'ed installments. Some of those within these verses are celebrated while others are skewered with stiletto worldly wit. For those who savor this saucy synopsis, any other history of Massachusetts will be a spiceless ordeal." --Christopher "Kip" Forbes, Vice Chairman, Forbes Publishing Company
