This book presents a theory of learning new causal relationships by making use of perceived regularities in the environment, general knowledge of causality, and existing causal knowledge. Integrating ideas from the psychology of causation and machine learning, the author introduces a new learning procedure called theory-driven learning that uses abstract knowledge of causality to guide the induction process. Known as OCCAM, the system uses theory-driven learning when new experiences conform to common patterns of causal relationships, empirical learning to learn from novel experiences, and explanation-based learning when there is sufficient existing knowledge to explain why a new outcome occurred. Together these learning methods construct a hierarchical organized memory of causal relationships. As such, OCCAM is the first learning system with the ability to acquire, via empirical learning, the background knowledge required for explanation-based learning. Please note: This program runs on common lisp.

Book One of Sunday Meetin Time left the Alrods sitting at their Thanksgiving table in 1939. Christmas and the New Year are just around the corner; a heavy snowstorm is brewing over the mountains. It would be a miracle if Sandy Claus could find the Alrod farm. There is no money for gifts and yet, the Alrods will have The Best Christmas Ever in the Barn. Five-year-old LeRoy is wearing a path back and forth from the window trying to get a glimpse of the reindeer landing. The oldest Alrod children, Billy Joe, and Sarah Louise are determined to make Christmas as happy as possible for the little ones. The younger children are sneaking to take bites from Sarah Louises poorly decorated cookies hanging on the tree. Many of the popcorn strings have more strings showing than popcorn. Sarah Louise is quite the little Mama caring for the new baby. Papa and the others are helping all they can to make up for Mamas absence. The cast on Papas broken leg makes it difficult for him to get around. Billy Joe is taking care of the animals. Medical bills are piling up; with a mortgage on the farm overdue. There havent been any offerings in the plate at church for Preacher Alrod in several weeks. The Alrods feel blessed to have had such a resourceful Mama. Because of her hard work all summer long, she has a cellar filled with canned foods; her cabinets are lined with homemade jams and jellies. Papa had filled the smokehouse with as much meat as he could. Without those preparations, they would have nothing to eat. Yet they were all looking forward to Night Watch Service on New Years Eve bringing in the New Year of 1940 in the little church on the hill.

The first interstellar starship, John Glenn, fled a Solar System populated by rogue AIs and machine/human hybrids, threatened by too much nanotechnology, and rife with political dangers. The John Glenn's crew intended to terraform the nearly pristine planet Ymir, in hopes of creating a utopian society that would limit intelligent technology. But by some miscalculation they have landed in another solar system and must shape the gas giant planet Harlequin's moon, Selene, into a new, temporary home. Their only hope of ever reaching Ymir is to rebuild their store of antimatter by terraforming the moon. Gabriel, the head terraformer, must lead this nearly impossible task, with all the wrong materials: the wrong ships and tools, and too few resources. His primary tools are the uneducated and nearly-illiterate children of the original colonists, born and bred to build Harlequin's moon into an antimatter factory. Rachel Vanowen is one of these children. Basically a slave girl, she must do whatever the terraforming Council tells her. She knows that Council monitors her actions from a circling vessel above Selene's atmosphere, and is responsible for everything Rachel and her people know, as well as all the skills, food, and knowledge they have ever received. With no concept of the future and a life defined with duty, how will the children of Selene ever survive once the Council is through terraforming and have abandoned Selene for its ultimate goal of Ymir?
